Coach McCullough has spent her life around the swimming community. She grew up swimming in the lakes of Canada as well as the pools of both Michigan and Florida. She maintains that her love of swimming and knowledge base of the sport comes from her exposure to dozens of effective coaches that have greatly influenced her.
In 1986 she was the youngest swimmer to win the senior national title in the 4-mile championship race and runner-up in the 1 mile. She was a three-year letter winner at Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg Pennsylvania. She received an appointment at the United States Naval Academy where she was a swim team letter winner.
Currently, Coach McCullough is a volunteer coach at Saint Maria Goretti in Hagerstown Maryland. As well as private coaching, she runs swim clinics throughout the year. She actively advocates for high-quality swim coaching and training that emphasizes stroke development, cognitive skills, and physiological training (in that order.) Other coaching experiences include three years at the Chambersburg Memorial YMCA, Waynesboro area YMCA, James Buchanan High School as head coach, and head coach of USA Rockets Swim Club. She researches extensively about current stroke and training developments in the sport. She is working on an e-book “The Conscientious Coach’s 15 Week Guide to High School Swimming”.
I have 20+ years of coaching and competing experience and have worked as a full-time coach for the past 7 years. I am passionate about developing efficient movement in the water and growing strong and smart swimmers of all ages!
I hold coaching certifications in the following: Total Immersion, United States Masters Swimming (USMS), American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), & Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instruction). I am a Licensed Training Partner with the American Red Cross and active with WOWSA (World Open Water Swimming Association).
I swam across the English Channel before swimming at American University in Washington, DC. I live in Riva, Maryland with my two children and kitty, Elli. I love open water swimming for competition and adventure! And, I most recently made the National USMS Top 10 List in (3) individual swim events in 2018.
I discovered the wonderful world of athletics as an adult. It wasn’t until my early 30’s I personally experienced the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. Once I was “bitten by the bug” I immersed myself in the triathlon world. Within my first year went to the USAT National Championship. After taking time off to have a baby I focused on long course racing completing 4 Ironman races and going to the 70.3 Worlds Championship.
My passion for sports and being the best I can be spread and I started helping others. I became a level 3 cycling coach with USA cycling and a level 2 swim coach with US Master’s swimming.
Whether it’s little kids or adults my goal in coaching is to help everyone enjoy an active lifestyle and be the best they can be.
